Police checkpoints

Police checkpoints in the southeast serve as toll gates for the police, with commercial vehicles and even private vehicles allegedly paying as much as N200 as a toll fee to the police. Failure to pay will result in the police deeming you unnecessary for flimsy reasons. Rather than being delayed by the police, many motorists choose to pay the fine.

The situation appears to have remained unchanged in that commercial vehicles frequently include the toll fee at each checkpoint they pass while traveling when charging their fares. The innocent passengers bear the cost of the toll. The recent increase in gasoline prices, as well as the police toll fee, contribute to the skyrocketing transportation fare.

Police cannot claim to be unaware of what the officers do at each checkpoint along the highway. Their silence implies that they profit from the extortion carried out by their men.
