 A tragedy struck the World Cup in Qatar  following  the death of Grant Wahl, an American sports journalist,  while covering the World Cup.

Wahl died while covering the World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands, according to ESPN.

During extra time, Wahl reportedly slumped back in his seat in the press box at Lusail Iconic Stadium, and reporters next to him requested aid. According to the reporters, emergency personnel responded swiftly, and they were later informed that Wahl had died.

Wahl posted on his website on Monday that he had attended a medical center while in Qatar.

Earlier in the World Cup, Wahl garnered international notice when he said he was barred from attending the US match against Wales in November because he was wearing a rainbow-colored T-shirt.

Wahl claims he was detained for 25 minutes at Al Rayyan’s Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium before being released by a security commander.
