The demand for dog meat because of its acclaimed medicinal ingredients has caused an increase in demand for dog meat.  In Europe and America, it may sound strange to hear that dogs are a special meat for nourishment believed to cure and prevent malaria and typhoid.

This belief, however, is not medical proof, though it has been held by many for ages. In places like Cross River State, dog meat is sold in the open unlike other cities where the meat is sold in hidden places or the seller could disguise to sell the meat to interested consumers who often hide to buy the meat.

The consumption of dog meat is gradually depleting the population of dogs. Families no longer raise dogs as it used to many years ago. Few dogs are seen roaming the street and few are seen in the residents of the rich, which is used for security.

The dogs seen in the houses of the rich are not the local dogs which are sold by their owners to those that kill it sell it as meat to consumers.  A local dog used as meat could sell at about N15000 to N20000 while the foreign dog sells at about N300,000 and above.

There is no law to stop the sale of dogs for meat, hence people who prefer the meat on the grounds of its acclaimed medicinal feature will continue to enjoy the meat.
